THE EDITOR, Sir: There is no real value in singling out individually or collectively government, Opposition or police personnel as many seem wont to do riding the back of the recent Tivoli incident...
The recent furore by the Jamaica Manufacturers' Association, the Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association and the general public about the increase requested by and given to the Jamaica Public Service by the Office of Utility Regulations should bring into sharp focus the need for an alternative and cheaper source of energy.
As we come to the end of June 2010, we are forced to rethink what Jamaica is and represents. Today, the image of our chief fugitive is the one that dominates the BBC and other international media outlets as Jamaicans at home and abroad hang their heads in shame. It will take a very long time for us to regain our self-respect and that of others, although the defiant among us try to spin these happenings in a different direction.
The points raised by Phillip Chambers in his Letter of the Day in The Gleaner of Friday June 25 need to be addressed. First of all, when he writes "the system of zoning pupils based on home address is sociologically and psychologically demeaning and must be scrapped immediately," he implies that we have a system of zoning in Jamaica at present.
The Editor, Sir: Commissioner of Police Owen Ellington has suggested to the nation that "police intelligence" was used to capture Christopher Coke. The writer of a letter to the editor asked: "Is it possible that the commissioner of police is trying to...
Even though I don't agree with his alleged wrongdoings, the look on his face tells the world that he is happy to be in the hands of the Americans because he doesn't trust the Jamaican government.
The Editor, Sir: As the Dudus Coke feeding frenzy moves away from Jamaica, I wonder how much longer Jamaica will treat its own with scant regard or brutal indifference.
The Editor, Sir: Jamaica has long been plagued by a disregard for the rule of law. There is a strong 'ends justifies the means' mentality that has pervaded our society for years. It is true that this may have been entrenched during our anti-slavery and later anti-colonial rebellions...
The Editor, Sir: The whole saga surrounding the US extradition request for Christopher 'Dudus' Coke, and the subsequent invasion and loss of more than 70 lives in Tivoli, including that of the members of the security...
I believe the real victim of the extradition request and the process that ensued was our criminal justice system. It is a travesty that it took the United States, a foreign authority, to build a case against a Jamaican citizen, who had long been alleged by the police and citizens to be responsible for masterminding a transnational criminal enterprise.
Coronation Market has seen a rise in traffic since the conflict in neighbouring Tivoli Gardens, but vendors are still struggling to make ends meet due to a 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. curfew that disrupts conventional business hours in the market.
The Editor, Sir: Recently, I have observed that the electronic media is very much into speculation, hearsay and gossip, just like the ordinary citizens out there.
The Editor, Sir: It is very clear our police officers are looking for soft target to create a scene. I am referring to the situation involving the Rev Al Miller...
The Editor, Sir: The annual discussions surrounding the transfer and placement of pupils from the primary to the secondary level, while not necessarily undesirable, will be a permanent feature of the education landscape until 'non-traditional' secondary...
The Editor, Sir: The more the crime bills are discussed and written about in the public domain, the more confusing the whole issue becomes. The bills are due to be passed in the Senate having already been passed in Parliament...
The Editor, Sir: "Pray for me and God bless Jamaica; I leave Jamaica and my family, in particular Patsy (mother Pauline 'Patsy' Halliburton), with a heavy heart,"I take this decision for I now believe it to be...
The Editor, Sir:"Even in incarceration, he is conducting his criminal enterprise.I happen to know about it. I had to order additional security to be assigned to one of my ministers because his assassination...
The Editor, Sir:The Revered Al Miller must be reminded that despite his quite probably good intentions, he and Dudus are not beyond the laws of this land.I say this as despite the alleged wishes of Dudus to be transported...
The Editor, Sir:By defusing the stalemate between the security forces and Jamaica's most wanted Christopher 'Dudus' Coke, Rev Al Miller, representing the Church, performed a job, not exactly outside his jurisdiction, in...
