THE EDITOR, Sir:The revelation - according to Jamaica Public Service (JPS) records - that fewer than 30 of the more than 4,000 residents in the community of Tivoli Gardens are registered as customers shows the level of theft and should be a concern to...

THE EDITOR, Sir: THE NEW crime bills being proposed by the Government are scaring me to death. The worst thing you can be in Jamaica is a black man between 19 and 35 years old. It does not matter if you have a good character and are working hard to be the best you can be; it is just not safe, and gangsters and thugs are not your biggest problem.

I have been thinking about the motto of 'out of many, one people'. That means we all share in the criminal element, whether we like or not. It is just like smoking - there are those people who actually smoke but we all have the potentiality of becoming passive smokers and a passive smoker is equally at risk as the actual smoker.

NOW THAT the Spanish Town 'dons' are at their first summit with our security forces, the question being asked by many is, who is in charge of Spanish Town tribal states?

FOR AT least the last decade, the phrase 'dismantling the garrisons' has become the recipe for curbing and reducing crime and violence in our society. But what exactly does it mean? I have discussed ways and means of dismantling garrisons with a wide range of persons and have really never been able to get my mind around a reasonable method.

THE EDITOR, Sir:THE LEAD story in last Sunday's Gleaner set off a few alarm bells in my head and, as a student of content/discourse analysis, a number of critical issues come to the fore when the article is read with an analytical mind.

I am a 13-year old male student of the Old Harbour High school who resides in the environs of Spanish Town and has experienced violent situations. I am writing this letter to voice my opinion on this whole Christopher 'Dudus' Coke issue. It has got out of hand, causing chaos in Kingston, Spanish Town and surrounding areas.

The French déjà vu is translated as seen or experienced before with an unsettling or eeriness about the experience. I had a déjà vu moment this past Saturday, June 12 when I watched and listened in horror as an eyewitness told his story on TVJ of a motor vehicle accident in Mandeville.

As an avid football lover, I recently bought into a cable subscription from Flow so as to be able to watch and comfortably enjoy all the matches of the World Cup in clear signals and receive first-class match analysis.

WE THE Jamaican people, have been hearing from time to time from our political leaders that they are drafting legislation to govern campaign financing. Our country is not mature enough to handle this proposal so I would strongly recommend that they stop the lip service please.

The six anti-crime bills may well add to the difficulties of our institutions - police, courts, prosecutors, lock-ups, and prisons - in addressing crime. The police at present lack the numbers, vehicles, and the support systems to succeed in reducing crime.

Claro Jamaica has misinformed the public with their various commercials. They said: "With Claro, your $100 can stretch and stretch for seven days of unlimited calls and texts to three people." This is not the case.

Like many Jamaicans, I grew up on the precepts that 'every mickle makes a muckle' and that 'one-one cocoa full basket'. Every lesson I have heard about saving, taught me that putting away a small bit with each pay cheque, or as often as possible, will one day lead to substantial amounts. Why then is Scotiabank undermining an invaluable cultural lesson and punishing those of us who only have mickles and singular cocoas?

SO WAIT a minute! Did we just find a shallow grave, a man buried alive, torture chambers and the works in Tivoli Gardens? So where is the outrage of the human-rights groups? Where is the denial from members of the community?

THE EDITOR, Sir:I READ and heard the venomous views and attacks coming out of the mouths of some Jamaicans, including the human-rights leaders, and some pastors, that the prime minister and other persons should resign.

THE EDITOR, Sir:I was profoundly perturbed and perplexed by the naive pronouncement of the opposition spokesman on national security that the recent operations in western Kingston by the security forces "have cut off the head of the crime monster".
