The Editor, Sir: Consensus is very difficult to achieve in Jamaica because of the serious political polarisation that prevails.

"Oh what a tangled web we weave, when first we practise to deceive." This quote by Sir Walter Scott aptly sums up the current situation with the Government, which has now found itself entangled in a web of deceit, with its pants down, in its handling of the Manatt, Phelps & Phillips contract.

In your Gleaner editorial of May 13, you closed with this: "In many democracies, deliberately misleading the country is cause for a prime minister to resign. Mr Golding and the Jamaican people must decide whether the PM's lies now render him a fatally flawed leader."

The Editor, Sir:In reference to the article titled "A poor first quarter for Caribbean Cement", published Wednesday, May 12, 2010, which says that some cement recently sold to the Dominican Republic by Caribbean Cement Company was charged 30 per cent duty, we would like to clarify the following.

Over the last few years, and more so in the last several months, so much has happened in our nation that it boggles the mind to think about it. In spite of the valiant efforts of many Jamaicans to demonstrate their talents and resilience as a people to keep Jamaica's flag flying high (both on the national and international scenes) there has been so much confusion and conflict within our country...

I prayed for you this morning (Thursday). I thanked God for the courage only He could have given you to begin telling the truth. Then I prayed that in the midst of this mess, you would smell marvellous opportunity. I prayed that you would not resign - at least, not right away - but instead, go for broke.

I am at one with former Prime Minister Edward Seaga on his recent suggestion that we should consider revamping the primary level of our education system by focusing solely on literacy and numeracy in the first two years of primary school.
